The balance of planting and mortality in a street tree population.

Roman, L. A., Battles, J. J., & McBride, J. R. (2014). Urban Ecosystems, 17(2), 387-404.

The paper is based on a study which monitors the mortality and demography of street trees in Oakland, USA for a period of 5 years. The demographic balancing equation was used to quantify the annual inputs and outputs to the system, tracking pools of live trees and standing dead trees. Population growth of trees was observed along with annual mortality was highest for small trees, and lower for mid-size and large trees. Such urban forest monitoring studies are important to understand the impact of tree planting programs.
